Langley Air Force base is the oldest continually active air force base in the world. Home to the 633rd Air Base Wing and Air Combat Command, this historical military establishment was established in 1916 as America was preparing to enter World War I. The base now serves many purposes, from ensuring timely global deployment of strategic missions to training and demonstration units. Each year, the base showcases the talents of its F-22 Raptor in an airshow comprised of aerobatics, parachuting, and other skills perfected by accomplished Air Force personnel.

When scouting a location for the base, military operatives chose a location in the Hampton Roads region due to its strategic location. Situated on the tip of the Virginia Peninsula, Langley Air Force base is amongst the James and Elizabeth Rivers with easy access to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. The area is geographically flat and, at the time, was surrounded by ample land for expansion. The popularity of the Hampton Roads region has continued for centuries because of its prime location along Coastal Virginia. As its coastline includes hundreds of miles of beach, the region suits more than just military fancy. With over 1.7 million residents, this area is the 36th largest metropolitan area in the United States. A mild climate allows for year-round enjoyment of outdoor activities. Residents and visitors alike enjoy boating, golfing, outdoor theme parks, and more. The area’s rich cultural history dates back to its settlement in the early 1600′s. This lavish history is on display at a number of historical homes, sites, and museums. Hampton Roads also boasts an exquisite educational system, with a number of universities, including the nation’s first ever, the College of William and Mary, established in 1693.
Langley Air Force base became known as Joint Base Langley-Eustis upon its merger with Fort Eustis on October 1, 2010.
